September 13, 2020 - Washington D.C. Taiwanese School, Advanced Mandarin Conversation

·         We discussed the following issues:

  • Today, we will welcome a new student, Joseph Faust, in our class.  Raymond, he is your coworker from FDA  (今天,我們將歡迎新同學,Joseph Faust,參加我們的課。 Raymond,他是您來自FDA的同事 - Jīntiān, wǒmen jiāng huānyíng xīn tóngxué, Joseph Faust, cānjiā wǒmen de kè. Raymond, tā shì nín láizì FDA de tóngshì)
  • Raymond said, "oh, yeh? FDA has 4,000 people, not 4,000, it's  10,000 people."  (Raymond (書宗)說:哦,是嗎? FDA有4,000人,不是4,000人,而是10,000人 - Raymond (書宗) shuō:Ó, shì ma? FDA yǒu 4,000 rén, bùshì 4,000 rén, ér shì 10,000 rén)
  • Teacher Wu said," let us count from 1 to 10." 吳老師說:“讓我們從1數到10。” Wú lǎoshī shuō:“Ràng wǒmen cóng 1 shù dào 10.”
  • The teacher said, it's ten thousand people, 4 and 10 is different in tone."
    老師說,“是一萬人。四和十音調是不同的。” Lǎoshī shuō:("shì yī wàn rén, Sì  hé shí yīndiào bùtóng.")
     
  •  Teacher Wu said, ("Good!  Let's introduce ourselves.") 吳老師說:(“好! 讓我們自我介紹。”) Wú lǎoshī shuō:“Hǎo! Ràng wǒmen zìwǒ jièshào”)
  • Joseph said, "I work at FDA Center for veterinary medicine。” Joseph 說:“我在FDA 獸醫醫學中心工作。”) Joseph shuō:“Wǒ zài FDA shòuyī yīxué zhōngxīn gōngzuò.”)"
  •  Raymond said,"I work at FDA Center for drug evaluation research." Raymond (書宗)說:“我在FDA 藥物評估研究中心工作。”") Raymond (書宗) shuō:“Wǒ zài FDA yàowù pínggū yánjiū zhōngxīn gōngzuò.”.")
  • Steve said,"I work at Johns Hopkins University as a professor." Steve (葛艾倫)說:“我在約翰·霍普金斯大學工作,擔任教授。” Steve (葛艾倫) shuō:“Wǒ zài yuēhàn·huò pǔ jīn sī dàxué gōngzuò, dānrèn jiàoshòu.”)
  • Raymond said, my two daughters are able to go school on August 31 because they are in private school) (我的兩個女兒可以在8月31日上學,因為他們在私立學校 (Wǒ de liǎng gè nǚ'ér nénggòu zài 8 yuè 31 rì qù xuéxiào shàngxué, yīnwèi tāmen zài sīlì xuéxiào)
  • Steve said,"my 12 years old daughter is having on-line class in Taiwanese school."Steve (葛艾倫)說:“我12歲的女兒正在台灣學校上課。” Steve (葛艾倫) shuō:“Wǒ 12 suì de nǚ'ér zhèngzài táiwān xuéxiào shàngkè.”
  • Raymond said,"my two daughters are both in school too.  The 8-year -old will take Taiwanese class instead.  The 5-year-old will take Chinese class. I do not want to give them pressure. But my wife speaks "Tagalog" the Philippin's official language."Raymond (書宗)說,"的兩個女兒也在上學。 8歲的女兒將改台語班,5歲的女兒將改中文班. 我不想給他們壓力. 但是我的說“菲律賓語”的官方語言“Tagalog"語”" Raymond (書宗) shuō, "Wǒ de liǎng gè nǚ'ér yě zài shàngxué. 8 suì de nǚ'ér jiāng gǎi wèi táiwān yǔ bān,5 suì de nǚ'érjiāng gǎi wèi zhōngwén bān. Wǒ bùxiǎng gěi tāmen yālì. Dàn wǒ de tàitài shuōTagalog- Philippin's guānfāng yǔyán"
  • Joseph said,"my son is also taking Chinese class in Taiwanese school." Joseph說:“我兒子也在台灣學校上中文課。”Joseph shuō:“Wǒ érzi yě zài táiwān xuéxiào shàng zhōngwén kè.”
  • Teacher wu said,"I used to work for National institute of Health and national cancer Institute as a computer programmer analyst in 1980-1982." (吳老師說:“我曾經在1980-1982年, 在美國國立衛生研究院和美國國家癌症研究所擔任計算機程序員分析師。”) Wú lǎoshī shuō:“Wǒ céngjīng zài 1980-1982 nián, zài měiguó guólì wèishēng yán jiù yuàn hé měiguó guójiā áizhèng yánjiū suǒ dānrèn jìsuànjī chéngxù yuán fēnxī shī.”)
  • Teacher Wu said, "Before we are able to connect four of us, we have glitches with connection on-line.  Raymond's daughter said,"Daddy, who is she? Is she our grandmother?"吳老師說:“在我們能夠連接四個人之前,我們在線連接出現故障。 Raymond (書宗) 的女兒說:“爸爸,她是誰?她是我們的奶奶嗎?”- Wú lǎoshī shuō: "Zài wǒmen nénggòu liánjiē sì gèrén zhīqián, wǒmen zàixiàn liánjiē chūxiàn gùzhàng. Léi méng dé de nǚ'ér shuō:“Bàba, tā shì shuí? Tā shì wǒmen de Nǎinai ma?"
  • Teacher Wu said, "I am so old." (吳老師說:"我很老!”- Wú lǎoshī  shuō:“Wǒ hěn lǎo!"
  • Raymond said,"I am sorry!" Raymond (書宗)說:“對不起!"Raymond (書宗) shuō:“Duìbùqǐ!”
  • Steve said,"no problem! my daughter, Jen-Jen's friend said,"Is he your grandfather Gong-Gong?""Steve (葛艾倫)說:“沒有關係!我的女兒,Jen-Jen 的朋友說,”他是你的公嗎?Steve (葛艾倫) shuō“Méiyǒu guānxì! Wǒ de nǚ'ér, Jen-Jen de péngyǒu shuō,” tā shì nǐ de gōng gōng ma?" 
  • Taiwan is a beautiful country.  Its people are very polite and friendly. people always leave the seats for me on the bus. 台灣是一個美麗的國家。 它的人民非常有禮貌和友好。 人們總是在公共汽車上為我. Táiwān shì yīgè měilì de guójiā. Tā de rénmín fēicháng yǒu lǐmào hé yǒuhǎo. Rénmen zǒng shì zài gōnggòng qìchē shàng wèi wǒr ràng wèi.
  • Teacher Wu asked,"Joseph, have you ever been to Taiwan?"  "yes, I have been there twice," Joseph said. "my wife's house is in Bei-Tou." 吳老師問:“Joseph,你去過台灣嗎?” “是的,我去過那裡兩次。”Joseph 說。 “我的在北投。”Wú lǎoshī wèn:“Yuēsèfū, nǐ qùguò táiwān ma?” “Shì de, wǒ qùguò nàlǐ liǎng cì.” Yuēsèfū shuō. “Wǒ de tàitài Jiā zài běi tóu.”
  • Teacher Wu ask, "Joseph, have you ever taken MRT?" 吳老師問:“Joseph,您過捷運嗎?”Wú lǎoshī wèn:“Joseph, nǐ zuò guò jié yùn ma?” 
  • Teacher Wu said, "I will give you a copy of MRT map next time when we meet in person in the class."吳老師說:“下次我們在課堂上見面時,我會給你一張捷運地圖。”Wú lǎoshī shuō:“Xià cì wǒmen zài kètáng shàng jiànmiàn shí, wǒ huì gěi nǐ yī zhāng jiéyùn dìtú .”

We discussed Lesson 75 - Tending the Garden, 整理庭院 - Zhěng lǐ tíng yuàn

Teacher Wu said, "There are 16 green tomatoes on the three tomato plants I planted in June." 吳老師說:“我月份種的三棵番茄,現在已經生了16個綠色番茄。”Wú lǎoshī shuō: “Wǒ Liù yuè zhòng de Sān kē Fānqié, xiànzài yǐjīng shēng le 16 gè lǜsè Fānqié."

We explained the origins of Chinese Characters - Written words practice as follows:

 The following words are this week's homework to practice writing.

We shared the proverb - 成語 Chéng yǔ "一分耕耘一分收穫"-"Yī fēn gēngyún yī fēn shōuhuò" in the class to come up with different interpretations as follows:

 Steve (葛艾倫) "King James version: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." "Early birds get worms."

Joseph "You get what you pay for."

Teacher Wu 吳老師 "No pain no gain", "Till the land and reap what you sow", 'There is no free lunch"

Because my father was a farmer (因為我父親是一個農夫) (Yīnwèi wǒ fùqīn shì yīgè nóngfū)

The next class will be at 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on September 20, 2020. 

We will plan to discuss Lesson 60 - Visiting Grandparents, 探望 祖父母- Tànwàng zǔfùmǔ
